The TMBT is Malaysia’s oldest Ultra-Trail Marathon with the inaugural race held in 2011. TMBT stands for “The Most Beautiful Thing”, and makes reference to the iconic Mount Kinabalu, which at the height of 4095 m is one of Southeast Asia’s highest peak and is a world heritage site. The TMBT course was set over the ridges and river valleys around the base of Mt. Kinabalu, with the highest elevation on the race course just under 2000m.
The 7th version of the TMBT Ultra-Trail® Marathon included 4 categories ranging from 12 km to 100 km. The 12 km category was designated for newcomers to experience the thrills of trail running. The 30 km and 50 km categories were for intermediate trail runners while the full 100 km category was for the experienced trail runners.
The 2017 routes were similar to the 2016 routes with only a minor improvisation to use a new hanging bridge at W2 and to avoid some slippery sections for the 30 km and 50 km course. All race courses started at the same location, staggered in time to reduce trail congestion.

The routes were challenging but beautiful, and it gave the runners an opportunity to experience remote villages and village trails through a varied landscape of forests, paddy fields and over steep ridges clad in pineapples, as well as enjoying the amazing views of Mt. Kinabalu and over the surrounding ridges and valleys which are often shrouded in clouds.
The trails crossed numerous streams with refreshing water on a hot day, while most of the larger rivers were crossed via hanging vine and bamboo or log bridges. Part of the trail follow the old heritage trails that used to be a part of the old buffalo trading routes linking villagers from Kota Belud to Bundu Tuhan.

The race has a reputation for being challenging to complete with the combination of steep terrain and technical trail sections, and the weather is usually hot in the first part of the day, but with a good chance of tropical rain-showers in the afternoon.

Here are the results for the 100 km run winner:
29:24:37 – Choon Lee Yong (Winner)
30:25:42 – Ng Xin Yun (First runner-up)
30:25:52 – Tee Yan Nee (Second runner-up)
These winners brought home an exclusive TMBT finisher’s medal, an official certificate as well as a finisher’s t-shirt from Compressport.
