Sibu Celebrates their Diversities through Borneo Cultural Festival

The Borneo Cultural Festival, or mostly recognized as BCF, is an annual week-long event organized by Sibu Municipal Council in Sarawak. It is a festival of food, music and dance, celebrating the diverse cultural background of Sibu community such as Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Malay, Melanau and Chinese.  The abundance cultural heritage in Sarawak comprises of multiracial beliefs and habits making the state unique.  The key objective of this event is to endorse the “Beauty in Ethnic Diversity” within Borneo Island right here in Sarawak.

BCF is back again this year with different varieties to bring both the locals and the tourists to Sibu. 2017 marks the 14th year of this event. It was held from July 20th to 29th 2017, showcasing not only local culture but also a mix of culture from overseas.

This event is open free for the public. The event this year was held at the Sibu Town Square, which is only within a walking distance of major hotels in the town centre.

There was a grand opening ceremony immediately after the parade at Sibu Town Square Phase 1 to commemorate the start of this Sibu annual event, Borneo Cultural Festival.

According to Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, this year, the council had also extended invitation to Ngangklun Ceria from Indonesia, Punjabi Folk Dance Academy from India and SMK Yu Hua from peninsular Malaysia as an addition to the multi-ethnic local performances.

Four friendship cities – Minging County, Gutian County and Gulou District from Fujian Province as well as Puyang County from Henan Province, China also contributed by showcasing cultural performances from China on the last three nights of the festival.

Borneo Cultural Festival is surely Sibu’s biggest tourism event.  It is a perfect time to mingle with the locals from all walks of life. Side events like trade shows, fun fair and stage show are being held for the people to enjoy their night outing with family and friends.

Come over to Sibu during July or August and join in the fun!
