Not many people have heard of this hot spring. If somebody asks about hot spring in Kuching, Kuchingites will probably answer: “the only hot spring that I know is at Annah Rais”, or “is there even a hot spring in Kuching?”
The second option was my answer if you asked me that a few years ago. Knowing nothing about hot springs, I had an image that hot springs can only be found in areas within The Pacific Ring of Fire and since there are no active volcanoes in Malaysia, I assume hot springs does not exist in our country. Turns out, hot springs can exist in nonvolcanic areas, and Panchor Hot Spring is one of them.
Kampung Panchor Hot Spring is a newly developed hot spring. It had just been officiated on April 2011 by our Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk Sri Dr James Dawos. The hot spring had been connected to the facilities and it is currently managed by the village security and development committee.
The hot water there contains various dissolved minerals, which can cure certain skin diseases and even heart disease. Based on the news on the officiating ceremony last year, it said that the village headman had his heart problem improved after soaking himself in the hot spring every day for six months.
It was widely known that bathing in mineral springs can have a profound effect on physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The mud from the hot water is also good for our skin. Dissolved minerals in hot springs are absorbed by the skin. It is less harmful and more beneficial compared to ingesting mineral supplements.
If you would like to visit this hot spring for the first time, we would advise you to use GPS application in you smart phones. This is because if you just drive through Kuching-Serian highway blindly, you will not find the intersection to the village as there are no signboards. You can search Kampung Panchor Hot Spring, but if you cannot find it in the map; you can type Kampung Panchor Dayak, Serian to locate it.
The hot spring is about 40 km from Kuching. It is accessible via Jln Lama Kuching – Serian or the new Kuching-Serian highway. For tourists, it is a perfect opportunity to see the greeneries along the road, and have a relaxing drive through the less congested road to Serian.
