If you are planning to visit Damai Beach in Santubong, and do not know where to go for good food at reasonable price, then you must check out Restaurant No. 88, Kampung Buntal.
There are several seafood restaurants in Kampung Buntal. Most of these seafood restaurants are run by Chinese family, but they do not serve pork. We have tried a few and our verdict is Restaurant No. 88 to be a good choice. Read on for our review.
The restaurant is a simple wooden house overlooking a jetty. People have been known to travel miles for good food and so here is one restaurant that is worth it to make that journey. The place is very unassuming, simple and may look a bit run down. The service was prompt and friendly.
We ordered fish deep fried with garlic and ginger. It wasn’t like any other. The fish was very fresh, and crispy. The soy sauce over the fish was also very delicious to eat with your rice.
Our next dish was Ambal (in Malay language) or bamboo clam stir fried with curry powder. This was our favourite dish because it did not taste like the usual bamboo clam stir fried with curry powder that we always eat at other restaurants. Instead, what was so special about this dish was that it was cooked with curry paste and the curry flavour was very thick and heavy. The moment you eat it, you would know that it was cooked with wet curry paste. It tasted good.
Our 3rd dish was sweet and sour prawns. The prawns were fresh. The sweet and sour gravy was like a yin and yang, the sweetness versus the sourness of the gravy were perfectly balanced. Need we say more?
We also ordered 4 bowls of rice, a soup, stir fried jungle fern, some fresh coconut juice and soft drinks. The bill came up to less than RM100 (about USD30). Good food at cheap price. Go check it out when you are around the area.
If you are staying at Damai Beach Resort or any of the hotel nearby, you can ask the hotel shuttle to send you to the restaurant and pick you up again later after your hearty meal.
