Adventure to Mulu National Park
Mulu National Park is widely regarded as Sarawak’s top attraction and is a Unesco heritage-listed site. It is the most heavily promoted of all the state’s national parks and is one of the most popular destinations in Sarawak, Borneo. The park is an unspoilt nature site, offering caving, trekking and wildlife-viewing. It can be enjoyed simply for its natural magnificence, or undertaken as a challenge that even experienced outdoors enthusiasts will delight in.
Among the incredible features in this 529-sq-km park are the two mountain ranges, one of sandstone and one of limestone, that adjoin within its boundaries. The sandstone peak of Gunung Mulu is 2377m, and the limestone Gunung Api reaches 1750m. In between are the more rugged mountains, deep chasms with clear rivers, and a unique assortment of habitats supporting fascinating and various species of wildlife.
Mulu National Park’s most famous attractions, though, are the Pinnacles, a forest of razor-sharp limestone peaks clustered 45m above the rainforest, and the so-called Headhunters’ Trail, which follows an old tribal war path (There is a package called 5D4N Headhunter’s Trail in www.BorneoTropicalAdventures.com). If you’re planning on doing any serious trekking in Sarawak, this park is highly recommended.
Mulu National Park owns some of the biggest and most remarkable caves in the world. Numerous spectacular caves are open to visitors, and a network of underground passages that stretches over 300km underneath the park itself but please be aware that visitors are not permitted to enter any of the caves within the Park without a Licensed Park Guide. Daily tours with Mulu World Heritage Guides are available to all the four show caves in the Park or you can make a reservation to explore some of the ‘wild caves’ on a guided Adventure Tour.
A few years ago cave explorers here discovered the largest chamber in the world, the Sarawak Chamber, alleged to be the size of 16 football fields.
Access to the park is either a long trip by boat from Marudi or a 40-minute flight. To get from the coastal city of Miri you must fly over impenetrable jungle or travel all day up the Baram, Tutoh and Melinau rivers to the mountains on the far horizon. Daily flights from Miri to Mulu and three times each week from Kuching and Kota Kinabalu are made available by MASwings.
There are no buses, no highways and certainly no taxis to Mulu National Park. So it’s the easy way by air or the scenic and slow, winding cruise by river. You can also arrive from the north flying in from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah or hiking down the Head Hunter’s Trail from Limbang.
Whichever adventure you choose to get to Mulu it is just an introduction to the jungle experience waiting for you.
