KUCHING: Riders from neighbouring West Kalimantan dominated the Matang FAC Highway Cycling Race organized by Sarawak Cycling Association (PBS) yesterday.
Fito Bakdo Prilanji of West Kalimantan’s VKool MS Motor team won the Men’s Open 100km race. Fito broke away from the main group as he sprinted to the finish line followed by his teammate and compatriot Agus Apriyanto in second place. Bruneian Mohd. Rukhzaidin of team Geotrax Brunei took the last podium finish.

“I won the race today but I am not really satisfied as I think the track is not as challenging as it was too flat. However I am glad that I had the opportunity to race here and to test my speed against riders from all around Borneo,” informed Fito. It was truly an international affair at the first race of the year to be organised by PBS as the two-day event saw participations not only from Sarawak and Sabah but also riders from neighbouring countries such as Brunei and Indonesia as well.
During the first day of the race, Laurel Lauridsen Adrian won the time trial by clocking the best time of 30 minutes and 1 second. Laurel represents team Corbussier of Kuching.
In the Boys U-17 68-kilometres category, Garry Tan of team OK Kona crossed the finish line first followed by ACC cyclers Mohd. Fitri Hassim and his teammate Awang Adib Awang Sufian.
Apart from the youth and open categories, yesterday’s race also saw the Men’s above-40 race over a distance of 68-Kilometres with Ahmad Joyo of team Joyo Pro-bike taking the chequered flag followed by Zainal Ariffin Haji Hasbie of team and Haji Supian Nor of team Corbussier in third.
The Women’s 68-kilometres race was ruled by SUKMA riders with Nurazimah Abdul Rashid, Nur Azrenna Ahmad and Carolline George coming in first, second and third respectively.
“This race is part of our SUKMA training schedule. I hope more races like this will be organised in future,” commented Nurazimah.
Sarawak Cycling Association (PBS) will be organising another race this year which is expected to be held at Bintulu.
